Auckland Council
Henderson, Auckland
August 2022 – August 2023
It’s not often a client asks the Cassidy team to build out of line and level, but that was the brief when Auckland Council engaged us to restore and strengthen a cluster of historic buildings at Corban Estate Arts Centre in West Auckland.
Our crew worked closely with heritage architect Graeme Burgess to sensitively refurbish and futureproof several high-heritage-value buildings, including the Old Cellar, which was built in 1903.
While restoring the timber joinery and corrugated cladding, we preserved the character of the buildings by embracing the imperfections of the original builders’ handiwork. This meant every element had to be hand-crafted to fit its context. We reused materials wherever possible, and old joinery that was beyond reuse or repair was happily repurposed by local artists. All items removed from site were documented and categorised by the heritage architect.
Our work also included safe asbestos removal, and seismic strengthening in the form of concrete foundation pads and steel portal frames.
As with any renovation, unforeseen discoveries threw up challenges, but through nimble thinking and good communication with the client and consultant, our team was proud to deliver a rejuvenated suite of buildings ready to face another 100 years.
