Here we extended the landmark Tip Top ice cream factory in Mt Wellington to create a new 700m2 hygiene production red zone area, plus a 300m2 mezzanine floor.
This was a complex project as we had to isolate our worksite to prevent disruption to the factory’s live operations and public tours, then carefully manage the interface as we opened the new building to the existing hygiene areas through the commissioning and completion phases. Because we had successfully completed previous projects for the client, they knew our capability and allowed us to self-manage the site using our own health and safety systems, rather than operating under a Permit to Work system.
Challenging aspects of the job included working around existing structures while fitting steelwork, and coordinating separate contractors for mechanical and equipment installation. Pre-commencement BIM surveying and scanning was invaluable in helping us coordinate the services and create detailed shop drawings to provide certainty throughout the build.
We combined high-level coordination, programming and sequencing with a solution-orientated, flexible methodology to complete the project with minimum disruption.
