Watercare Services Limited
Beach Haven, Auckland
June 2023 – March 2024
Cassidy Construction’s ‘can-do’ attitude came to the rescue when Watercare needed an urgent fix for a broken wastewater pipe at the bottom of an 120m-high landslide caused by Auckland’s Anniversary Weekend flooding and Valentine’s Day cyclone in early 2023.
With the failed pipe discharging wastewater into the Rangatira Reserve in Beach Haven, time was of the essence – so it took the team just three days to connect a temporary pipe to stem the flow while they worked with Watercare on planning a more permanent solution. Cassidy’s network of subcontractors proved invaluable in enlisting one of only two walking excavators in the country. Also known as a spider digger, it allowed the site team to access the steep slope safely and with minimal environmental impact.
Ground instability during the winter months delayed work on the permanent fix, but in summer 2024 the Cassidy crew returned to complete what they had started. Major earthworks were required to construct a timber retaining wall, replace the pipe and reinstate the site and stream bed.
