When the Muriwai Water Treatment Plant was buried under an 800m-long landslide during Cyclone Gabrielle, Cassidy Construction was initially brought in simply to remove some of the debris. But in recognition of the team’s capability and previous experience in this field, Watercare soon expanded Cassidy’s role to become main contractor responsible for reinstating the entire plant and reservoir, with overall supervision of health and safety for special contractors on
the challenging site.
The team had to remove 300 cubic metres of material from the site before they could begin remediating the plant by installing new concrete tanks, building timber retaining walls, laying new pipework and electrical cabling, and creating a debris field to prevent further fallout from reaching the plant.
Despite complex geotechnical constraints and ongoing weather watch protocols due to the instability of the cliff above the plant, the Cassidy team worked closely with the client’s internal and external commissioning contractors to ensure that this priority project was completed to schedule and within budget.
