Watercare Services Limited
Waitākere Ranges, Auckland
April – August 2023
When the Anniversary Weekend floods of January 2023 knocked out a 40m-long tram bridge supporting the main outlet pipe from the Upper Nihotupu Dam, Cassidy Construction was quick to respond to Watercare’s call for help. Together, they planned a fast-track design-and-build structural reinstatement of Quinn’s Bridge and the watermain supports so the dam could be returned to the network.
The site’s location in dense bush high in the Waitākere Ranges posed unique challenges. With no road access, all materials and machinery, including diggers, had to be helicoptered in. To maximise efficiency, reduce the need for site visits and meet Watercare’s tight deadline, Cassidy’s engineering team used three-dimensional modelling to create a highly accurate digital model of the bridge to use as a basis for their detailed drawings and plans.
Despite strict health and safety protocols that prohibited site access when rainfall and wind thresholds were exceeded, the project was completed on-schedule and within budget.
