Rapid recent population growth in the seaside settlement of Mangawhai called for upgraded infrastructure – including this new 15-megawatt electrical substation, which futureproofs local demand for power for years to come.
The single-level tilt slab construction features a control room, switch room, fibre room and two large-scale transformer bays that required custom-designed 5.8m-tall precast wall panels and full-height aluminium ventilation louvres.
But it was construction of the 1.5m-deep concrete basement for cable management that proved most challenging to the Cassidy crew. During the excavation and foundation stages, persistent ground water meant the crew had to employ multiple pumps to control the water levels.
Keeping water out of the building on an ongoing basis was a critical risk item for the client, so Cassidy installed a quality waterproofing system that will perform under consistent water pressure now the building is operational.
