Cassidy’s experience in successfully working with local contractors to deliver infrastructure projects around the country came to the fore on this Taranaki job for gas and electricity distributor Powerco. Although the precast substation itself was a relatively simple structure, the project’s winter timeframe and remote, windswept location more than an hour south of New Plymouth added complexity and necessitated local suppliers and subcontractors.
Significant earthworks were required to allow for drainage and sewerage and to cut out the basement, which was futureproofed with a robust waterproofing system. Once the foundations and slab were poured, the precast perimeter panels, structural steel and PIR roof followed and the structure was fitted out with lighting, low-voltage power, security and fire systems.
As the high-voltage substation was located directly adjacent to critical live infrastructure within Transpower’s Ōpunake Substation site, the team liaised closely with both Powerco and Transpower to ensure safety throughout the build.
