Cassidy Construction was contracted by Ventia NZ Operations on behalf of Transpower to construct a new relay room for the Penrose Substation.
The building consists of a concrete slab with trough sections, precast concrete walls and structural-steel roof framing.
A number of cabling trench sections were also required throughout the site, as well as foundations for new electrical equipment and a stormwater system.
Our crews are well versed in working within live high-voltage environments like this one, but asbestos contamination on site threw up a new set of challenges. Creative and technical workarounds were required to circumnavigate the risks posed by the asbestos-contaminated ground and safely deliver the project.
