Cassidy Construction were contracted by Ventia NZ Operations Ltd on behalf of Transpower to construct a new relay room for the Penrose Substation.
The building consists of a concrete slab with trough sections, precast concrete walls, and a roof framing of structural steel.
A number of cabling trench sections were required throughout the site as well as foundations for new electrical equipment and a stormwater system.
Working within a live HV Substation presented challenges but it was the asbestos contaminated site which created the biggest challenge. Creative and technical work-arounds were required to circumnavigate the asbestos contaminated ground.
