Contact Energy Ltd
Taupō, Waikato
March 2022 – July 2023
The Tauhara Power Station is a huge undertaking carried out by Contact Energy near Taupō. The 174MW geothermal steam turbine power station is designed to produce more than 1420 GWh of low-carbon renewable electricity a year, which is around 3.5 percent of New Zealand’s electricity needs. Cassidy Construction built two of the ancillary electrical buildings – the SGW Pump Station Electrical Building and the Separation Building.
The two-level pump station features heavily reinforced concrete foundation raft slabs placed 1.5-2m below ground level, with a maze of thick reinforced concrete foundation walls above. It has a structural steel frame and masonry cladding. The Separation Building relies on more than 50 concrete columns, which extend up to 6.5m high. Masonry infill panels form the structure for this build.
With multiple contractors working simultaneously on this complex project, good communication was key to avoiding clashes. We completed the shell and internal finishes of both buildings in seven months, allowing Contact Energy to commence their fit-out alongside building service works.
