Cassidy Construction was engaged by Vector to build a new switchroom and two transformer bays to upgrade the capacity and security of the power supply at the Riverhead Zone Substation – then by Northpower to install high-voltage ducting at the same site.
Enabling works included thrusting and undergrounding the 33Kv overhead power lines, as well as site clearance and demolition.
After excavating the three-metre-deep waterproof basement for the new switchroom, we erected the precast concrete wall panels, poured the concrete basement slab and installed the structural steel basement and roof framing finished with insulated panels.
The job involved many key risks, including working next to and below high-voltage power and asbestos, and installing precast panels over live equipment. The site housed multiple underground services and a vast number of overhead lines, so we conducted in-depth investigation and planning to ascertain their impact on the design and works programme.
The final stage required us to return after the high-voltage works were completed, so we could install two transformers within an existing switchyard. This came with its own challenges, as we were working and installing precast panels in a confined area. We also completed the site works, including fencing, concrete landings, a new driveway and asphalt throughout.
In a separate contract, Cassidy Construction was engaged by Northpower to install high-voltage ducting throughout the live site. This new network of ducting extended to all corners of the site, terminating at poles and overhead lines, buildings and duct stubs that had been drilled through the road corridor.
In accordance with Northpower’s requirements for cutting over feeds to the new switchroom and transformers, we planned our work in three stages. Our self-performing civil team was able to be agile and responsive to the client’s needs, attending site at short notice when required.
Our team worked closely with the client to identify where design and layout changes were needed in order to avoid site clashes of underground services. Feedback from the Northpower team is that they found it very beneficial to have the same company that had previously worked on the switchroom and transformer bays then bring their site and project knowledge forward to the ducting installation.
