Cassidy Construction was contracted by Counties Energy to upgrade the Barber Road Substation south of Auckland. The project included construction of a new switchroom building, two exterior transformer bunds and a switchyard, along with site works and 300m of new asphalt driveway.
Because the site sat adjacent to a live Transpower site with multiple live power lines running overhead, we established a construction area permit system with Counties Energy. This allowed construction to take place with minimal interruptions to the electricity network – only a few power outages were required to enable craneage activity.
Work was carried out in stages, with the transformer bunds prioritised early as they were required for the new transformers’ delivery date. The switchroom building followed, and construction continued to be kept in line with the clients’ needs so they were able to install switchgear and cabling on schedule. The final site works were completed in coordination with separate contractors on site.
