Cassidy Construction was contracted to build one of the largest BP Connect service stations in the country near Papamoa in the Bay of Plenty.
Located off State Highway Two on Bruce Road, the build consisted of a larger-than-normal shop, an eight-bay canopy, a carwash and a three-lane truckstop set across a 15,600 square metre site.
But the scale of the service station was not the most challenging part of the build – it was more of an issue that the site was located on very soft ground with a high water table.
We mitigated this by preloading thousands of cubic metres of fill onto the site, then leaving it to sit for 18 months, compressing the ground by well over a metre.
It took four months to remove 20,000 cubic metres of earth before we could stabilise the site and begin construction.
