As the major civil works contractor for Project Electron at NZ Steel’s Glenbrook plant, we built the foundations and concrete structures to support a new electric arc furnace.
The two major structures were an 18m-tall precast electrical building and a 70m-long raised in situ concrete conveyor with a 1800mm-thick, 800m3 single-pour raft slab. Both were constructed within the confines of the existing steel plant, which means we operated in a very congested site in close proximity to other contractors.
Our early contractor involvement (ECI) and building information modelling (BIM) teams worked closely with the project design team to finalise detailing for the electrical building and the associated water treatment reservoir that we constructed outside the steel plant.
Because of our self-performing capabilities and strong subcontractor relationships, we were able to resource up for this large-scale job at short notice. At its peak, we ran a team of about 100 in two shifts to expedite progress. In one month alone, we installed 140 ton of reinforcing and placed more than 1500m3 of structural concrete.
