Cyclone Gabrielle is estimated to have caused 850,000 landslides nationwide. Behind the high-profile road closures and loss of homes lay a plethora of smaller slips, particularly in the steep terrain of West Auckland. Cassidy Construction was engaged by Watercare to remediate a number of these, including at Exhibition Drive in Titirangi, Seaver Camp off Piha Road, Jacobson’s Depot off Scenic Drive, View Road in Waiuku, and Ceramco Park in Glen Eden.
The diverse nature of these projects showcases Cassidy’s ability to deliver innovative solutions to unique challenges. Their scope varied from a three-day soft-engineered fix for a washed out section of the Nihotupu Tramline, to the fully engineered three-month repair of a 30m landslide undermining Watercare’s access road to the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir.
For each project, we provided Watercare and their consultants with informal ECI advice and worked with them to come up with practical and achievable solutions that would ensure future resilience of their network.
As all the jobs were located in parks and reserves, we took care to limit disturbance to the natural environment. One project
on a former landfill site called for particular attention to environmental hazards, while another was on a popular walking track, requiring considered interface with the public.
