Vector is staying ahead of demand for electricity in the fast-growing Matakana region north of Auckland by adding a new zone substation to their network. Cassidy Construction won the market tender to construct the double transformer bay and separate switchroom on a rural greenfield site on Sandspit Road. Both buildings have concrete piled foundations and precast wall panels, with structural steel internal framing and insulated roof panels.
Our first challenge was to level the sloping site by building a concrete retaining wall around the perimeter. This substantial retaining wall is 4.5m out of the ground at the lowest point, with 600mm-diameter piles and columns and in situ concrete infills in between. Once the retaining walls were formed, we imported approximately 2000m³ of hard fill to build the site up to its finished levels.
We completed the project to schedule, delivering a more resilient power supply to the local community.
