Following numerous successful flood recovery projects for Watercare around Auckland, we were asked to attend to a 250mm-diameter polyethylene wastewater pipe that had been exposed by erosion and landslips along the banks of the Waikumete Stream in West Auckland.
The design involved diverting the pipe away from the erosion-prone area by directional drilling to a new alignment outside the hazard zone. We thrust the new line under a private driveway, installed a new manhole and made new connections. We also reinforced the stream bank to prevent further erosion and protect the pipe from future damage.
Because the job took place on private property we kept the site footprint as small as possible. This tight site area combined with difficult access to add complexity to our excavations and drilling, so to facilitate efficient operations we employed temporary measures including both trench shields and propping.
Apart from a daywork contractor who completed specialised thrusting work, the entire project was self-performed by Cassidy Construction. We made it our business to establish and maintain positive relationships with the landowners on behalf of our client, and ensured that we reinstated the properties to a high standard.
