This project involved remediating one of several landslips around Watercare’s dams in the Waitākere Ranges by constructing a reinforced soil slope (RSS) wall using the proprietary TerraMesh modular system, and also directional drilling of drains into the existing slip face.
Because the only access to the workface was limited to light machinery and vehicles, we helicoptered in our excavator and established two lay-down areas for delivery of materials.
To ensure the safety of our team while we worked on the steep site, we constructed temporary steps with handrails around the side of the slipface and installed a fixed access ladder that removed the need for working at heights.
The job was entirely self-performed by one of Cassidy’s civil crews, except for a dayworks contractor who did specialist work to facilitate the directional drilling. Poor weather conditions were the highest risk we faced from a delivery perspective, as Watercare’s safety protocols prevented working on the tramline when the risk of rock fall was heightened, but despite above-average summer rainfall we delivered a solid result to programme and budget.
