A splitter box in a wastewater treatment plant is a large concrete chamber, several metres tall, that distributes the wastewater flow out to the reactor clarifiers.
At Watercare’s Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant, prolonged contact with hydrogen sulphate from the wastewater had eaten away at the concrete surfaces within the GT Splitter Box – so as part of Watercare’s ongoing Assets Upgrades and Renewals programme we were commissioned to repair the damage.
Unlike a later project on another splitter box at the same plant, here we were able to temporarily reroute the water flow so we could work on the empty chambers.
We began by hydroblasting the internal walls back to good concrete, then we applied a 25mm-thick spray epoxy, successfully extending the splitter box’s lifespan by another 25 years.
