Back in 2021, we built a new water treatment plant for Watercare on the site of a decommissioned 1970s plant in Pukekohe. Following extensive damage during the Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods in 2023, we returned to reinstate the plant and futureproof it to be more resilient in extreme weather events.
The first stage of our mahi was to urgently relocate plant and equipment above the flood level and get the plant back online in anticipation of a predicted drought. We also reinstated damaged cabling between the bores and main plant, a job that required us to thrust ducting under the stream and dig extensive trenching.
In the second stage, we constructed two new buildings – one designed to remove the existing brine tank above the flood plain and the other to allow Watercare to create sodium hypochlorite from salt on-site. We began work on-site while the design was still in concept and assisted with the design process as work progressed.
Cassidy team members self-performed all civil, drainage and carpentry works throughout both stages of the project.
The Pukekohe Water Treatment Plant supplies the local community with five million litres of water from two bores about 270 metres below ground, and is now optimised for increased capacity when additional bores are drilled in coming years.
